August 30 BIOL3012 is boringSitting in a BIOL3012 lecture, listening to Dr Kim Summers talk about science... what science is, what research is etc etc. Stuff we should already know. Well.. a bit more about me. (lately), Monday i spent pretty much all day at uni... started at 8am, finished at around 2:30ish... Tuesday, woke up, cleaned, spent most of morning and half of afternoon driving... got to the lab and tried to catch up on lab work, Wednesday, had to finish lab work left unfinished from tuesday... went to lectures and then went back to lab... stayed at uni studying till 6:30pm... went to gees and hung out till way too late.... Thursday: Now, obviously, went to lecture, coverslipped my slides ... went to PASS meeting... and must study for BIOL3003 mid sem exam tomorrow (25%) Now for more interesting stuff about me... Been going okay apart from being perpentually tired which isn't very fun. Also been trying to spend the time i can with Gee, but sometimes i dont know whether he wants me to spend that much time with him (even though it might only be 2 or 3 days a week)... I suppose its a good thing that we arent spending all that much time together then we wont get as bored... but i dont really like what it may say about our relationship in general. I guess i am thinking too much into it as always. Hmm.. Parents? Well they arent divorced yet, but might be soon. My dad is back from poland and got himself all new clothes and toys and brought us back a few things from my grandma on mums side, but nothing from him. He got a new phone which i haven't even seen yet.. and gave his (new) phone away to someone in poland instead of giving it to my mum who has had her phone for years and really needs a new one as her battery keeps dying. Am kinda stressing out about school... not the fact that its hard, but more the fact that i am finding it really difficult to sit down and actually get to do my work... I am not even working all that much, and i think my manager doesnt like me which makes work a bit more difficult, plus many people arent doing their job which makes my job more difficult. Anyway, i am going to procrastinate in another way... Ciaoz, Ania May 07 An awesome piece of prose for an awesome night.Hi guys, Realise i havent blogged in quite a while yet again, however theres a rather awesome reason for my blogging today, my friend Andrew wrote the awesomest spiel about a party i went to on Sunday. Full kudos and so much more to Andy!! He is going to make a great reporter. == == Prohibition Party Laid Down by Law. TEAGUE CITY: Flouting of prohibition was in full swing last night in the usually quiet suburbs, as local politician and well-known underworld figure Sam Law threw a swinging party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his birth. Resplendent in full flapper costume, stunning women from around the metropolis attended, escorted by dapper gentlemen in the finest attire of the day, including fedora hats, suspenders and that gangster favorite, firearms. High-lights of the evening included high stakes poker games, various gun duels and the constant salvos of flashbulbs as the party-goers embraced "photo-graphy". Several infamous and notorious characters of ill repute were in attendance at the decadent affair including Christina the Gamblerina and her male consort, Max "the Greek" Capone and noted physicist Simon Bohr. Also in attendance were world famous dancers Alice and Tyanna, erotic novelist Mai Su, gentleman gangster Shanghai Jack, the mysterious Raj Jee and his new flame-haired flame Ania. Mysterious white-clad late comer Meg added some flapper grace and class to the event, stirring up mischief and breaking hearts, particularly Lael's! …And Ania's. …And Su's. With his ravishing girlfriend Jess by his side, Sam was presented with thousands of gifts, many of them from the mysterious east. Among the booty were a shiny new watch, new decks of cards and four hundred thousand pieces of drinking paraphernalia. With the gambling, monopoly and suprisingly tame drinking games raging into the early hours of the morning, junk food was consumed, innocence smothered and foursomes formed. There was no word today on the condition of the revellers, but hopes are held they will be back to their usual level of mischief come Tuesday. There was also no comment from those who did not attend out of fear, laziness or crushing workloads.

Premeds and Associated News (PAN) April 23 Another mondayI am tired, so i wont write much.... Had a mid semester exam for molecular cell biology today; didnt go TOO badly.. Anyway, just telling you all that i am still alive, NZ pics should be up when i get a chance to go throw 'em Love, ME P.S. S/M by Metallica rocks!! (i think it stands for symphony and metal.. minds out of gutters please!!) Attached is a tid-bit from NZ February 15 V. Interesting DayI woke up this morning to the sounds of my alarm 'hissing'. Hissing is what your radio does when theres no channel in that frequency and you have the radio volume low. That was my alarm, it decided to wake me up by trying to play a radio station and failing miserably. So i woke up 30 minutes later then i wanted. But thats okay, i've learnt that sleep is good. So today, i spent about 2 hrs cleaning because we were having a house inspection between 10am - 2pm. I was ready at 10am, just for the inspection. They didnt come till 12:30pm so all that time i was doing absolutely nothing so i would create the least mess possible.. I didnt even eat because i didnt want to mess anything up! And then.. i bumed around for a few hours, Dad came home with a new car.. a toyota prada, i think i am going to nickname it godzilla, because its from Japan and its massive! Then i did some tutoring -- I love tutoring, gives me such a high.. its a good thing i've found a job where people actually listen to me!! I am going to love lecturing :P. And then. i came home. had something to ate (because i was starving), watched the end of SVU and then Julian called me from Sydney and we had a nice long chat!! So my day, which started on a rather crappy note, is ending amazingly well!! And tomorrow is going to be tres fun!! Can't wait!! *giggles like a lil catholic schoolgirl* (I dont think the catholic-ness has anything to do with it.. but i just put it in). Oh and i got some new songs, J-T, Gia Farrell and the new unreleased FOB!! Awesomeness. Oh and William Joseph is AMAZING! LISTEN TO IT! Love lots, Ania "Noli me tangere, for Caesar's I am, And wild for to hold, though I seem tame." Sir Thomas Wyatt - Whoso list to Hunt February 08 Blah blah blah...I apologise (I always have to do this), for this blogging for so long.. it takes alot of concentration to sit and write about something, and usually i have all my fantastic ideas at times when I am nowhere near my computer or a piece of paper and pen so they go unheard. But they are fantastic!! So, uni semester is coming up fast.. I've been pretty bored at home.. been to the gym everyday this week! I really do love exercise even if it tries to kill me... but I beat it everytime mwahaha... I am trying to get into the habit of exercising so I will want to go.. right now I go because I would die of boredom and I need to be kept occupied doing SOMETHING!. Tomorrow I think I might clean my car.. it needs it alot. And then I shall go to the gym and do bodypump and hope it doesn't kill me like it did last time.. although it was the first time I had done bodypump in 2 years. I guess I deserved all I got! Oh.. and I cut my hair! My mum hates it, I am starting to like it, its alot more manageable and easy but I do miss the long hair.. Oh well.. it will take about 2 years to grow back to how long it was.. shall be interesting. I've also done my timetable and it is as follows: Monday: 9am - virology lecture (1 hr) 10am - molec cell biol lecture (1 hr) 11am - dev. neurobiol lecture (1 hr) 7pm - tutoring cameron (maths) 1 hr Tuesday: 8am - molec cell biol lecture (1 hr) 10am - genomics lecture (1 hr) 11:30am - tutoring amanda (statistics) ... not sure if this will go ahead, i dont feel competent tutoring her.. completely different way of doing stats then we did. 2pm - molec cell biol prac (2 hrs) Wednesday: 8am - virology lecture (1 hr) 10am - virology prac (3 hrs) 5pm - tutoring caitlin (maths) 1 hr 6:30pm - tutoring cameron (maths) 1 hr Thursday: 10am - genomics lecture (1 hr) 12pm - virology lecture (1 hr) 1pm - dev. neurobiol lecture (1 hr) 2pm - genomics prac (2 hrs) 6:30pm - tutoring vlad (maths/chem) 2 hrs Friday: 10am - molec cell biol lecture (1 hr) 11am - dev neuro biol lecture (1 hr) So my timetable isnt that bad.. i have 5 hours tutoring (not including Amanda), 5.5 hours mater work a week (really 5.5 x 3 a month.. we get a week 'off') if i get a biol student i might take them on too, but only if.. otherwise i probably wont take on any more students.. and i get tuesdays and fridays all to myself!! yay!!.. gym and study time.. I really want to study hard this year (i know i say that every year).. but this year i really mean it!!! Anyway, should go!! Thankyou all for helping me hit 10,000 accesses!! Love you all! *mwah!* --Ania ThankyouW00t! We have surpassed 10,000 views.. Now i have to go tutor!! I will post later tonight!! (but please dont hold your breath!!) -- Ania January 29 Political correctness gone wrong... at least its funnyDue to the climate of political correctness now pervading America, Kentuckians, Tennesseans and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as "HILLBILLIES".

December 28 The time between xmas and new year.We are stuck in a rather weird time frame... The time between xmas and new year is a very peculiar one. No-one knows exactly what to do, do you go to work? (if your lucky enough to have work!), do you go shopping? (even though you already have everything you want, and anything you do want, you know you won't have the time to enjoy --- like a Wii!!!!). Do you play with all your xmas stuff? (that is if you got toys..), Do you read a book? (i need a book)... Do you just idlely waste your time like you have the last few days under the pretense of 'xmas holiday'? How about we do some homework? Find out about different cultures, i am sure not all of earths billions of people dont celebrate xmas, actually i would be surprised if half of them did. -- not even everyone celebrates 'our' new year, some people dont follow our gregorian calender. Actually, did you know, that until 1990's the University of Helsinki had a monopoly on the sale of calendars in Finland? I didnt until wikipedia told me. So maybe, instead of trying to grab all the cheap stuff from Myer, we should be thinking about people who do things a little differently from us? Have a good new year everyone. -- Ania December 18 Pink rocks.I know I haven't blogged for a very long time, since november... and its now nearly end of december, but i have a shocking headache so I am not sure what kind of entry this will be. Most likely all over the place per usual :P. Haven't been doing too much, just working on my summer semester project, working in general at mater and tuition (have done my last tuition there!!! yay -- I'm free!!!). Looking for work at the moment, just anywhere, will probably end up in retail or something, (because ofcourse no-one employs science students to science related jobs *gasp!*). The mater job is really screwing me up, the lifts and the buzzing of the computers in the office (they are really old computers) gives me vertigo and makes me sick. Plus i have a moral thing against the actual job, even if it does pay well.. i feel like i am selling my soul. So, i dont really know whats happening, i havent been paid yet for the research project (its supposed to come in instalments)... And christmas shopping is draining my funds.. :P Anyway, I hope everyone has a great christmas and new year!! Love, Ania November 15 TiredI am really really really tired :(. If anyone wants to do something on sunday or sometime next week, message me and i'll organise something.. I am working tomorrow from 3:30-7:30 and friday from 5-6, and all day saturday (but i might go out sat night..!!!) Ciao Ania. *collapses* November 10 Its all overWell thats it, a whole semesters worth of work assessed in just a few very short hours that i usually cut short early by graciously walking out when my head feels like imploding. Its hard to imagine why examiners thought up of this method of testing knowledge.. why confine hours of work into very short space where only a small fraction is covered even though theres a deception that everything MAY be on it, thus you need to know everything. It feels like a bit of a disappointment to everything else that was covered... where is the respect nowadays? Crammed into 100 marks while assessments assess something completely foreign to what the curriculum actually encompassess. I am getting some sleep ^.~ Ironically, i have a long day tomorrow... Night, P.S. U2 ROCKED!!! Thankyou Kate *mwah* October 24 HewoHi everyone; Sorry for not writing anything for ages; its been SO busy with uni and work and everything. Fruition is still giving me shitty hours ..gr... but i have another private tutoring students for stats, which has sessions with me a few times a week so that brings in some too. I have exams in 3 weeks *massive freak out!* my timetable sucks too; i have an exam on the first sat (org gen), on the monday (cell & dev) and TWO on thurs (embryol and biochem!!) So i am so dead. but on the plus side i am finished all in one week... which doesnt give me much time to study (ba-bow!) On a positive though; our biol2008 poster is finished and ready for submission and its kick ass!! Anyway just wanted to tell everyone i am still alive (barely)... Love, Ania September 29 New photosNew photos have been added.. I took them just then of my room!! AND my sandfly attack.. geesh these things itch!! GRR!!
See you all monday!
--Ania September 19 'the potato story'~ Thanks for Lievan for giving me this!
THE POTATO STORY
Well, Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other,
and finally they got married, and had a little sweet potato, which they called 'Yam.' Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they told her about the facts of life.
They warned her about going out and getting half-baked,
so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato,' and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots. Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into
the sack and make a rotten potato out of her! But, on the other hand, she wouldn't stay home
and become a Couch Potato either. She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins. When she went off to Europe,
Mr. and Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland. And the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. And, when she went out west, to watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get scalloped. Yam said she would stay on
the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks that say, 'Frito Lay.'
Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U.
(that's Potato University) so that, when she graduated, she'd really be in the Chips. But in spite of all they did for her,
one day Yam came home and announced she was going to marry Eddie McGuire. Eddie McGuire!
Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset.
They told Yam she couldn't possibly marry Eddie McGuire because he's just . . . Are you ready for this?
Are you sure?
OK! Here it is! A COMMON TATER September 16 Photos!Hey! Going to add a few photos to this post as penace for not putting photos up the other day! Oh and to all my brissie friends -- expect an email soon about a certain event during midsemester break!!! (will be sent whenever i get around to it... dont hold your breath!!) September 15 computer heat and pen stainsHehe.. a rather melodramatic title, but i think it suits seeing as i am in the ilC and the computers always make this room feel like a sauna in comparison to the rather chilly brisbane morning outside. I know i haven't posted in a while and rest assured, there are pictures to go with this entry as a small gift to you all.. not that you really need a gift because this thing hasnt really been serial. Theres just been alot going on, and i wont list everything specifically because 1) i dont have enough time and 2) it will make me depressed :P But just to mention a few: assessments, exams, failed exams, pracs, prac reports, work, work prep, parents, physical and emotional pain, constant unthrowable exhaustion... you get the picture. A few tips from the all wise ania (yes i am laughing too)... 1. Don't scull coffee... just dont.. its a REALLY bad idea... unless you want to look like a dog trying to get peanut butter off their tongue. 2. Sleep is important! 3. If you wake up in your sleep screaming in pain... something is definitely wrong! 4. oh and food IS good for you.. stops you from shaking ^.^ So... you may be asking what busy ania is up to today... WELL i have lectures from 9am - 11am (cell and dev and biochem... histol was cancelled) Then i am going to IMB lecture on telomere biology, then i am going to study my slide for histology till about 2pm. THEN drive to Milton and pick up $100 worth of polish meat... then pick my dad up from the city.. take the meat and my dad back home... then drive my dad to Manly. (yes i am playing taxi today...) So... busy :) Anyway.. have a great day.. pictures will be added when i get home.. whenever that will be ^.~ Love, --Ania August 06 Mater talkToday when i was working at the Mater and with a patient ['How many days do you think you are in for?? Oh.. okay you realise it finishes 4pm the NEXT... its cheaper if...'] when i overhead the couple in the next bed (this was at the mothers maternity hospital). The woman was saying how good the meal had been, because she didnt have to cook, and the husband replied with 'and you wont have to cook' and she made a 'what?' sound, and he explained that she wasnt cooking for two weeks when she got home because he didnt want her to do anything strenous. It was so sweet. (afterwards they launched into a conversation about whether or not the baby could hear them).
What was so significant about it (and why i wanted to blog it) was because it portrays the kind of relationship i like to think i have with Mitch. We both care immensely for each other, even if we dont completely or even half-ly understand each other, and we just do the little things that help each other get through the day... like a sexy mms, or just a funny pick up line.
... Yes, you can all go puke now.
I am off to bed!!
'Nite!!!
[I miss you like a fat kid misses a cupcake... thats a WHOLE lot...] {In a SMS from Mitch :P}
Love,
Ania
P.S. if your wondering about the picture, it was just cute... and its holding a cupcake! August 03 Moulds, Drugs and other elastic thingsWow, spaces has changed... *pretty* ... sorry about the title, it sounded cool! I was actually thinking of going to sleep, but then i realised i am too hyped up (i ate like 3 tim tams before) to sleep.. so here i am. I just watched a pretty cool documentry on SBS about the discovery and manufacture of penicillin. I think i did a spiel about it on this blog, so i am not going to do it again, but to cut a long story short, Fleming, the man we all seem to credit with making penicillin a household name is actually just the man who discovered the mould and its bacteria-eating abilities. (Which is pretty amazing in its self... but..) Fleming didnt do the hard work isolating the active ingredient from the mould (what we now call penicillan), he didnt do any of the work testing it, or figuring out a way to purify sufficient amounts of it in high concentrations, all done during WW2 where funding for a unknown scientific compound was non existant and they had to use the cambridge chemistry department as a mould factory. It took them 2 years to isolate a small amount of just pencillian.. and then the tests.. first on mice and then clinical trials, and all this was done by australian scientist Florey and his chemist, Chain and pharmist/chemist/engineer extraordinare Heartly. Unfortunately only Fleming, Florey and Chain got the Nobel prize (although Heartly was the first person to be awarded an honoury doctorate from Cambridge university). Now, where you ask, does fleming come into this, well he realised the potential of penicillian when the boys from cambridge began to do test trials, and he pretty much stole the publicity and drove all the credit in his directions.. when all he had done was been careless with a plate of bacteria, left them on a plate open overnight where spores of the mould dropped on them and ta-da.. not really very brilliant when it was all an accident. This was at a time where patents were considered immoral and cash sucking... if they had patented it, this problem wouldnt have arisen. To bring things back to current events, Ian Frazer of UQ is currently having problems with his right to fame with his viral cervical cancer drug because of patent irregularities. (there are actually 2 other universities claiming to have discovered the use of virus-like particles (VLPs). [If you were wondering who the other two unis were, they are the University of Rochester and Georgetown University]. Fortunately, the drug companies who have deals with these labs, Merck and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), have reached a side-stepped agreement so that any disputes between patents will not affect the manufacturing of the drug which will potentially save millions of women. It has already been approved in the USA by the FDA and is up for approval in Australia. So, to wrap things up.. because the chocolate seems to be wearing off.. Fleming didnt have much to do with the actually making penicillin useful to us, he just discovered that it may be of use... and left it. The real work was done by Florey, Chain and Heartly. The pictures attached are: 1. Pencillin mould eating a colony of bacteria (the white-blue squiggles are the bacteria, large white round thing on the bottom is the mould, you can see a clear boundry between the two where the penicillin has degraded the bacteria). 2. The chemical structure of penicillin (there isnt just one penicillin molecule, there is a whole class of them). 3. The japanese pop-band 'Penicillin' 4. Yes i realise there was no picture... the Americans apparently named a crater on the moon after Fleming, i wanted to see if i could find a picture of it, but i couldn't. July 30 NEW RESOLUTIONI am making a new *semester* resolution.. (its only a new semester resolution because thats pretty much the most recent event i can bung this onto, its not exactly the new year...)
So, all of you must be wondering what this resolution actually is! And i shall tell you..
RIGHT...
...
..
..
.
NOW!
My new resolution is to be healthier and take better care of myself. I have come to the realisation (after skipping a meal today and feeling very woozy and having the sensation that i wasnt actually standing on the ground at work) that being even a little unhealthy.. like missing meals or a few hours of sleep is really not doing me any good. I suppose getting up everyday but sundays at 6am and only getting about 6hrs sleep everynight isnt a good thing either. I suppose i should list all the bad things i do, might make me more aware of the things i need to change:
1. Constantly sleeping too little
2. Skipping meals
3. Eating unhealthy (living off museli bars, chocolate, chips etc)
4. Not exercing enough (causes an increase in tension from stress)
5. Bottling up stress and negative emotions
6. Not having any 'breathers'
7. Stressing too much
8. Being lazy :P
ANyway, i cant think of anything more.. if you think of something, just comment :P
Hopefully i can fix a few of these.. *fingers crossed*
--Ania
July 26 A little biochemistry lesson...At uni.. not sure whether this will work because it seems to be rejecting everything!
Originially from a email sent to Richard :P Hmm.. had a biochemistry lecture (Actually called cellular biochemistry of health and disease... but biochem is so much easier to say) was fairly interesting, cheaper foods use methods to make polyunsaturated fats into polysaturated fats by hydrolysis, and a byproduct of this is trans fatty acids, which are really bad for you (as opposed to good natrually occurring cis fatty acids ... difference between cis and trans is how the hydrogen groups allign themselves on either side of the hydrocarbon chain). They are bad for you because they increase the amount of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is bad for you.. and decrease the amount of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol which is actually good for you!!! Consumption of lots of trans fatty acids is a proven factor in coronary diseases!! -- SO dont eat cheap foods!! (i.e. Maccas, 'Black & Decker' Homebrand etc..) Fingers crossed!!! --Ania July 25 Uni!As some of you know, uni has started back up again... and already my wrist is sore from writing so many notes! (The lecturers are all being lazy and not uploading anything... blackboard still thinks i am doing BIOL1014 and BIOC2012) For 2 of my subjects, i dont have many pracs, which is a good thing = more study time!! I was really worried that i wouldnt have as much time to study because of all my commitments, so i am glad its not that bad! :) I spent half the day arguing with myself that today was wednesday.. funny huh? OH. i got up at 7am today. i usually get up at 6am, and leave the house at 7am.. i left the house at 7.07am today.. was outta there in a record 7 minutes.. i think it was the panic that initally got me going :P I am really bored and i dont really know what else to write here... So i might give you some trivial information. DID you know... all polar bears are left handed! (Thanks Karlee.. i didnt know that :P) Ciaoz!! --Ania July 21 Thankyou!!This blog has officially had 8000 hits since its birth!!!
Okay, i am sure your thinking 'its not a big deal' but it is... 8000 is a lot okay?!!?!
.. So thankyou everyone who has read my blog and even took that extra step to comment, i know i may be rather boring but the insane interludes should be at least a little entertaining.
I just got up so i am going to go for a walk to wake me up (it works... especially when you, like myself, wake up tired).. and then eat breakfast.. and maybe watch a movie... eat some icecream... (mm.. icecream)..
So yeah.
Oh. Hi Richard! :P -- Thanks for the talk last night, i really really needed it!!
Have a good day everyone!!
Love,
Ania July 19 Hard CandySaw Hard Candy today, its a good movie, a little intense at times, its not a 'scary movie' but it does carry an R 18+ rating. I think i connected with the movie too much. The main character, Hayley, everything she did, i could see it as either a physical juxtaposition i have done or a metaphor for something i have done.. So it was rather painful to see her do such things to someone else and what it feels like for the recipient. It movie carries a very strong message and i think its a very powerful movie. I wont say any more about it and leave you to make your own decisions about it, but do go see it. July 12 101 Turn offs~ Written by Jess and Ania, when Ania was in perth :P
